DESCRIPTION

On September 1st, 1991, Aguas de Corrientes was awarded the overall concession of the drinking water system and sewage draining system of the capital city of Corrientes and of nine other cities in the rest of the province: Saladas, Goya, Mercedes, Esquina, Paso de los Libres, Curuzú Cuatiá, Santo Tomé, Monte Caseros, and Bella Vista. This scope was widened in March 2006, when three other districts were added: Empedrado, Santa Lucía and Yapeyú. Back then, EMACO made a major investment for purchasing equipment and starting up the new service, and it operated it for several years. Methods of water potabilization are classified according to the source origin: Surface water sources (lakes, rivers and reservoirs), which need a complex physical and chemical treatment (flocculation, chlorination) for the water to be suitable for consumption. Underground sources, resulting from the rain penetrating permeable soil layers. Water stops its way when it encounters an impervious layer and creates an aquifer or a groundwater layer. As to sewage treatment, the applied processes were: • Treatment of sewage effluent in stabilization pond. • Sewage treatment plants with activated sludge. At present, the license is being executed by a local operator that purchased the business unit.
